Saint Euthymius the Great was born in Melitene of Armenia (modern day Malatya, Turkey) in the year 377 AD. His parents, Paul and Dionysia, were childless for many years, and when they were finally allowed to have a child, they dedicated him to the service of God. At the age of only three years old, Euthymius lost his father. Then, his widowed mother gave him to the pious bishop of Melitene, Eutroius, who along with the readers Acacius and Synodius, gave him a good education. Indeed, once they had him ordained to the priesthood, they placed him as exarch over the monasteries. Around the year 406 AD, Euthymius travelled to Jerusalem, where he became a hermit at the cave of Saint Theoktistos and lived a life of severe ascetism. He received from God the grace of clairvoyance and the power to work miracles. The Saint reposed in peace in the year 473 AD at the age of 97 years old. His memory is honoured on the 20th of January.
