Saint Dionysius was born in 1547 AD in the village of Aigialos of Zakynthos and was brought up on the teachings of the Gospel. As soon as he was old enough, he took up teaching the divine word, taking care, at the same time, to contribute to the relief of the poor. Later on, he became a monk at the royal Monastery of the Strofades, taking the name Daniel, where he occupied himself with vigils, self-denial and study of the Holy Scriptures. Afterwards, Dionysius was ordained to the priesthood by the bishop of Cephalonia and Zakynthos, Theophilus. In 1577 AD, he went to Athens on his way to Jerusalem. But the then bishop of Athens, Nicanoras, heard him preaching one Sunday. Impressed by the brilliance of his sermon, he made him bishop of Aegina, with official approval of the Church of Constantinople, and gave him the name Dionysius. He became sick, however, from his great labours and had to resign. He withdrew to the Monastery of the Theotokos Anaphonetrias (“She who answers back”) in Zakynthos, where he lived an ascetic life, preached the Gospel with love and helped the residents of the island. Dionysius died in advanced old age in 1622 AD and was buried in the Monastery of the Strofades. His memory is celebrated on the 17th of December.
