Saint Dionysius was from the city of Athens. He lived and was martyred during the reign of the Emperor Domitian. He was distinguished by his philosophical education and his deep intellectual and spiritual cultivation. Originally, he was a pagan and a member of the Areopagus. The preaching of Saint Paul touched his suffering and sensitive soul and he chose to be baptised. Afterwards, he succeeded the pious Hierotheos to the episcopal throne of Athens. He was rewarded by God for his labours for the new faith with the ability to work miracles. He travelled to many parts of the West, where he preached the word of the Gospel and interpreted sacred Scripture. When he reached Paris, he was arrested and then beheaded. His disciples Rusticus and Eleutherius were also martyred. Saint Dionysius was author of many theological texts. His memory is honoured on the 3rd of October as well as on the 12th of October with the whole Synaxis of the Saints of Athens. Work of ARTIS GILDING & RESTORING.
