Saint Demetrius was born around the year 280 AD and was the son of an aristocratic family in Thessaloniki. He rose quickly through the ranks of the Roman army, so that at a young age he already held the rank of Chiliarch. While an officer in the Roman army, he became a Christian and gathered around him a circle of young men for the study of Holy Scripture. In 303 AD, he was imprisoned in Thessaloniki, because he ignored the Emperor Diocletian’s decree “concerning the denial of Christianity”. In the end, he and his companion Nestor died as martyrs. In Byzantine as well as contemporary icons, Saint Demetrius is often depicted on horseback, on a red horse, trampling the pagan Lyaeus, a gladiator of the era, whom Nestor had defeated through the help of the Saint’s prayers. Saint Demetrius is considered the patron saint of Thessaloniki. His memory is celebrated on the 26th of October. Work of ARTIS GILDING AND RESTORING.
