Saint Gerasimos Notaras was born in Trikala of Corinth in 1506. His father, Demetrios, descended from the Byzantine family of the Notaras house and his mother, Kali, inspired in him love for Christ. The Saint fled while still a teenager from his house, and in 1527, he went to Zakynthos to complete his education. Afterwards, he went to Jerusalem where he was ordained a deacon and then a priest by Germanos, Patriarch of Jerusalem. He remained there for twelve years ministering at the Church of the Resurrection. He toured Egypt and Syria before returning to Kefalonia in 1559 where he founded his own monastery. Saint Gerasimos died on August 15th, 1579 AD. Because the Dormition of the Theotokos is celebrated on this day, Saint Gerasimos’ feast takes place on the day immediately following.
