Saint George is depicted on horseback, riding a white horse and clothed in the uniform of a Roman officer. He wears ornate armor and a red mantle on his shoulders that billows in the wind. Seated behind the saint, there is a young man holding a water jug and a towel. According to the tradition, this was a young captive who was freed by the saint while he was washing the hands of his master. At the horse’s feet lies the winged dragon amid human bones. The saint is seen slaying it with his spear, freeing the terrified princess, while the king gives the saint the keys to the city, as he and his courtiers look on from their castle. In the background of the icon, we see the Lord’s hand extended from heaven in blessing as an angel crowns the saint with the crown of martyrdom.
