Saint Geramius Notaras was born in Trikala of Corinth in 1506. His father, Demetrius, descended from the Byzantine family of Notaras, and his mother Kale inspired in him love for Christ. The Saint left their house as a teenager and in 1527 he went to Zakynthos to complete his education. Afterwards, he went to Jerusalem, where he was ordained a deacon and then a priest by the Patriarch of Jerusalem, Germanus. He stayed there for twelve years, serving at the Church of the Resurrection. He then travelled to Egypt and Syria before returning to Cephalonia in 1559, where he founded his own monastery. Saint Gerasimus died on the 15th of August in 1579. Because the Church celebrates the Dormition of the Theotokos on this day, the feast of Saint Gerasimus is on the following day.
