Saint Gennadius was born in the city of Kostroma of Lithuania and was the son of a pious and noble family. From his childhood years, he showed a great love for the liturgical life of the Church. While still a young man, he went to Moscow, where he met another young man, Theodore, who also had the same fervour for monastic life. They went together to get the advice of Saint Alexander of Svir, who told Gennadius to go to the Monastery of Komelsi. There, Gennadius became the most devoted disciple of Saint Cornelius and was tonsured a monk. As a young monk, he was adorned with the graces of the Holy Spirit. He and Saint Cornelius founded a new monastery in Kostroma, the Monastery of Lubemov. The Saint lived out the rest of his life there in peace and asceticism. God accounted him worthy of working miracles and even granted him the grace of clairvoyance. Saint Gennadius reposed in peace in 1565 AD. His memory is honoured on the 23rd of January.
