Saint Wenceslaus, “the heavenly protector of the Slavic people”, was born around the year 907, the eldest son of the Czech prince Vratislaus I and his wife Drahomira. Under the guidance of the priest Pavel and the supervision of his grandmother, Saint Ludmilla, he began to learn the official Slavonic language, to study Latin and to even gain a decent knowledge of Greek. With this education, he was easily one of the most educated leaders of the region. At 18 years old, Saint Wenceslaus took hold of the reins of power. He had a strong sense of justice and felt that he ought to resist courtly intrigues. As a leader, he was a model Christian. Yet, it was not his fate to govern long. In the end, Prince Wenceslaus was murdered by his own brother, Boleslaus, who became convinced through slanderous gossip that his brother had hostile feelings toward him. The body of Saint Wenceslaus was interred at the church of the city of Boleslaw, but it took three days for the soil to absorb his blood. Veneration of the Holy Prince spread quickly to Russia, through the Orthodox Church, where for generations the sons of the governing family were baptized with the name Wenceslaus. His memory is honoured on the 28th of September. Work of ARTIS GILDING AND RESTORING.
