Saint Basil the Great is considered a Father and Ecumenical Teacher of the Orthodox Church. He was born in 329 AD, in the village of Annesa of Pontus and grew up in Caesarea of Cappadocia. He had eight brothers, three boys and five girls. Of the four boys, three became bishops. Equipped with the tools provided by his Christian upbringing, Basil began his saintly ecclesiastical career. Most importantly, he took the Divine Knowledge of the Gospel and put it into practice, through a life of austere asceticism. After his initial studies in Caesarea, and afterwards in Byzantium, while still a young man, he went to Athens, where he completed his studies after four years. There he as his fellow students Gregory of Nazianzus and Julian the Apostate. He decided, however, to follow the monastic life and, toward this end, he went to the great centres of asceticism to be taught the ways of the monastic life in Egypt, Palestine, Syria and Mesopotamia. Little time passed before his exemplary pastoral and spiritual work led to his election to the episcopal throne, succeeding Eusebius to the episcopate of Caesarea. In his struggles against Arianism, he courageously defended Orthodoxy, leaving the emperor and the Arians in astonishment. His other works as a pastor of souls were equally unparalleled. He built the famous “Basiliad”, a group of charitable organisations, caring for the poor, orphans and widows, etc. In his fiftieth year, Saint Basil, on account of his frail constitution and strict ascetical life (some sources say from grave illnesses of the liver or kidneys), departed this life on the 1st of January in 378 AD.
