Saint Basil, fool for Christ, was born in Moscow in 1468 AD, during the reign of Ivan III, to poor yet pious parents. From the earliest years of his life, it was clear that he would be crowned with the grace of God. He refused to nurse from the left breast of his mother and never took milk on Wednesdays or Fridays. A hardworking and God-fearing young man, Basil had the grace of prophecy, which was discovered completely by chance. From sixteen years old until the end of his life, he renounced all the things of this world and lived on the streets, naked and poor. As many of his contemporaries bear witness, he was the only man that Ivan the Terrible feared. Indeed, Tsar Ivan held him in great esteem and feared how Basil could read the hearts and thoughts of others. When, a little before his death, Basil became gravely ill, the Tsar himself, with his wife Anastasia and their sons, paid him a visit. He reposed in 1552 at the age of 88 years old. His memory is celebrated on the 2nd of August. Work of ARTIS GILDING AND RESTORING.
