Saint Anthimos Vayianos was born on July 1st, 1869 AD in the region of Saint Luke of Livadia in Chios. His visit to the Skete of the Holy Fathers of Chios to repair a privately owned icon of the Mother of God inspired him to embrace the monastic life. From that time on, his whole life became inextricably bound up with this icon. The Theotokos became for him a source of inexhaustible strength in the difficult struggles that were to come. The revered Elder Pachomios of the Skete, who tonsured him into the monastic lesser schema, became his guide in the ascetical life. He showed obedience to Elder Pachomios and excelled by the grace of God, becoming great in his asceticism and virtue. He was later assigned as the priest for the leper colony in Chios. His entire ministry at the leper colony demonstrated his deep faith and his willingness to serve. Having cultivated an ethos of holiness around him, he erected the glorious Holy Parthenon of the Theotokos, “Aid of Chios”, in order to house refugee nuns, who came to Chios fleeing from Asia Minor. Concluding a life of ministry, now mature and at his fulness of days, at the age of 90 years old, he conducted the Divine Liturgy on the 27th of January, 1960 AD for the last time before reposing in peace a few days later.
