Saint Alexis was born in Rome to pious and affluent parents. His father was named Euphemianus and was a senator. His mother was Aglais, who could not have children. They prayed to God day and night to grant them a son. God heard their prayer and granted them a boy, whom they raised to be devoted to God. When it was time for him to marry, his parents had him engaged to a young noblewoman, but the very night of the wedding, Alexis abandoned the bridal chamber and chose to follow the monastic life. He walked to Edessa of Mesopotamia and there lived outside of a church for 17 years in unceasing prayer and fasting. One night, the Theotokos appeared in a dream to the church’s sexton. She asked him to bring the “Man of God”, as she called him, into the church. That man was Alexis. Wishing for neither honours nor glory, he decided to flee Edessa and head toward Tarso. Of course, God had other plans for him, and his boat was diverted to the West and landed in Italy. Thus, Alexis returned to his homeland where he then lived for 17 years as an anonymous beggar, which he could do because his appearance had completely changed. Not long before he left this world, he recorded his life story on a piece of paper so that everyone could recognise him. The Saint’s remains were transported to the Church of Saint Boniface, where they began to work many miracles and to gush myrrh continuously. His memory is honoured on the 17th of March.
