Saint Alexander of Svir was born on the 15th of June, 1448 in the Republic of Novgorod to a family of pious Christians. He was the third child of Stephen and Vassa. His baptismal name was Amos. He was meek, obedient, and a lover of fasting. When he reached the appropriate age, his parents wished for him to marry, but he left for the Monastery of Balaam at 19 years old. At Balaam, he was tonsured a monk after 7 years at 26 years old and took the name Alexander. The holy remains of the humble Saint Alexander were incorrupt, gushed myrrh and worked many miracles, until Communism prevailed in Russia. Then, the communists stole his relics and locked them away in the “scientific laboratory” of the Military Academy in St. Petersburg. His relics were finally returned to the Holy Monastery of the Saint in 1998, where they began to again exude myrrh and work miracles. His memory is celebrated on the 30th of August.
