Saint Daniel graduated with excellent grades from the Evangelical School of Smyrna. In 1881, he took up residence in his hut in Katounakia of Mount Athos, which later grew into the monastery of the Danielaioi brotherhood of today. His memory is celebrated on the 8th of September.

Icon with water-gilding on natural linden wood. The wood has been prepared in heat and gilded with gold leaf 24K, in accordance with traditional Byzantine techniques. The icon has been painted with egg-tempera paints for best performance and endurance of colors used. The colors were chosen based on studies and analyses of older icons by renowned iconographers, after ARTIS had first conducted conservation treatments on them.
Saint Daniel was born in Smyrna in the year 1846. He graduated with excellent grades from the Evangelical School of Smyrna. From his 19th year of age, he desired to become a monk, and he visited many monasteries before finally settling down at the Monastery of Saint Panteleimon on Mount Athos, where he was tonsured a monk in 1866. Later, he would visit the Monastery of Saint Anastasia Pharamakolytria in Vasilika near Thessaloniki. While there, he contributed greatly to the spiritual revival of the Monastery and was beloved by all. Upon his return to Mount Athos, he remained for almost five years at the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi. From there, he was sent to his homeland, where he stayed for nine months. In 1881, he took up residence in his hut in Katounakia of Mount Athos, which later grew into the monastery of the Danielaioi brotherhood of today. Elder Daniel was an iconographer, and to this day, the monastery he founded is renowned for its excellence in icon painting. He reposed on the 8th of September, 1929 AD.
