Icon with water-gilding on natural linden wood. The wood has been prepared in heat and gilded with gold leaf 24K, in accordance with traditional Byzantine techniques. The icon has been painted with egg-tempera paints for best performance and endurance of colors used. The colors were chosen based on studies and analyses of older icons by renowned iconographers, after ARTIS had first conducted conservation treatments on them.

Father Nicephorus was born in a mountain village in Chania called Sirikari. At 13 years old, he showed the first signs of Hansen’s disease, also known as leprosy. When he turned 16 years old, the signs of his illness began to become more obvious. With the help of a clergyman, he went to Chios where there was then a leper colony. Within 2 years of arriving there, he was tonsured a monk. Working in the gardens, he lived in genuine obedience and strict fasting. On account of his illness, he gradually lost his sight. In 1957 AD, he went to Anti-Leprosy Station of Saint Barbara in Athens, in Aigaleo. At that time, father Nicephorus was almost 67 years old. His body and his eyes had been completely destroyed and disfigured by his illness. Many people flocked to his humble monastic cell at Saint Barbara of Aigaleo in order to receive his blessing. On January 4th, 1964 AD, he reposed at the age of 74 years old. He is the patron saint of those with infectious diseases and those afflicted by pandemic.
