Icon with water-gilding on natural linden wood. The wood has been prepared in heat and gilded with gold leaf 24K, in accordance with traditional Byzantine techniques. The icon has been painted with egg-tempera paints for best performance and endurance of colors used. The colors were chosen based on studies and analyses of older icons by renowned iconographers, after ARTIS had first conducted conservation treatments on them.
Elder Ephraim of Katounakia was born in 1912 in Ambelohori of Thebes. On September 14th, 1933, he decided to become a monk, and so he went to the “desert” of Mount Athos in Katounakia, to the hermitage of Saint Ephraim the Syrian. Elder Ephraim was a simple man of the people, who through deep hesychastic formation and the practice of noetic prayer reached great spiritual heights. He was even granted a personal encounter with the Lord through the Grace of the Holy Spirit. Saint Ephraim also showed himself, through the grace of God, to be a practical guide in pastoral issues surrounding marriage and family life. He helped many young people enter marriages but without ever pressuring them. His preserved letters are a spiritual treasure and a “school for parents”. Around February 27, 1998, he handed over his holy soul into the hands of his Creator.
