Icon with water-gilding on natural linden wood. The wood has been prepared in heat and gilded with gold leaf 24K, in accordance with traditional Byzantine techniques. The icon has been painted with egg-tempera paints for best performance and endurance of colors used. The colors were chosen based on studies and analyses of older icons by renowned iconographers, after ARTIS had first conducted conservation treatments on them.

Saint Eugene, along with Valerian, Candidus and Aquila, attempted to hide themselves in the mountains during the persecutions of Diocletian (284-305 AD) and Maximian (285-305). But they were arrested and ordered to deny Christ. They responded courageously that they would not deny Him and so they were exiled to the fortress of Pityountos in Laza. Then they brought them back to Trebizond, where their persecutors tried with threats and promises to lead them astray into idolatry. They were unsuccessful, however, and the eparch Lysias, in his anger, ordered that they be put to harsh tortures. First, they were stripped naked, and strong men lashed their bodies with whips. Then, they hammered iron nails into their bodies and cut their sides. Then they used hot torches to cauterize the bleeding wounds. Since Eugene and his companions remained unchanging and triumphant in confessing their faith, they were finally put to death by beheading (292 AD). Their memory is honoured on the 21st of January.
