Saint Leo was born to pious parents of noble lineage in Ravenna, Italy. After he completed his studies, he was ordained priest in Ravenna and later, on account of his great purity and the spirituality of his life, he was elected Bishop of Catania in Sicily. He became a protector of widows and orphans; he taught and counselled his flock and built the Church of Saint Lucy the Martyr. The Saint became known for his struggles against the heretics of his day, whom he utterly defeated, not only with words, but also in writing. God endowed him with the grace of miracle-working. It is worth recounting, too, his encounter with the wizard Heliodorus, who had led many astray and boasted that he was all-power and that he did not even fear fire. To punish him and prove the power of the true God, Leo, after much prayer, ordered a fire to be lit, into which he forced Heliodorus to jump, and the Saint leapt alongside him. Heliodorus was consumed by the flames, while Saint Leo remained unharmed. The faithful, seeing the miracle, were amazed. Saint Leo reposed in 784 AD and his relics are interned in the Church of Saint Lucy. His memory is honoured on the 20th of February.
