The Prophet Jeremiah was the second of the four Great Prophets of the Old Testament. Born in the city of Anathoth in 650 BC, he came from a wealthy, priestly family and his name means “God exalts”. Jeremiah was made holy from his birth. He was called to the office of prophet in 627 BC. As a prophet, he was active chiefly in Jerusalem where he prophesied the coming hardships of the Kingdom of Judah, which was then under constant threat, from both the Egyptians as well as the Babylonians. His prophecies, however, provoked hatred from the leaders of the Jews, who imprisoned him. He was liberated, finally, by the Egyptians, after they had destroyed Jerusalem. Nevertheless, he continued to prophesy about coming calamities and hardships, and so he had to face new persecution from the King Jehoiakim, who considered him an enemy of the Egyptians. But when the Egyptians, too, were defeated by Nebuchadnezzar in the year 605 BC and Judea was surrounded by the Babylonians, Jeremiah continued to preach his prophecies. In this way, he provoked his final exile from Jerusalem which forced him to take refuge in Egypt. After this time, the fate of the Prophet Jeremiah remains unknown. The Old Testament book of the same name is attributed to his authorship, although it written down by his scribe Baruch,. The memory of the Prophet Jeremiah is celebrated on the 1st of May.
