The Prophet Isaiah was the first of the four Great Prophets of the Old Testament and the most brilliant and eloquent among them. He was the son of Amos, born in Jerusalem in approximately the year 774 BC. His name means “God saves”. Isaiah was called to the prophetic ministry in 738 BC. The period in which he lived was especially difficult for the kingdom of Israel. Hence, the work of the Prophet Isaiah, throughout his whole career, was to denounce sin and impiety, to condemn apostasy and idolatry and, above all, to call on God’s people to repent and turn back to Him. The most important aspect of Isaiah’s writings are the numerous, very clear prophecies pointing to Christ that he recorded. Illumined by the Holy Spirit, he foretold the birth of the Redeemer from a Virgin and that His name would be “Emmanuel”, which means “God is with us”. For this reason, he was called by the Fathers “the Evangelical Prophet” or the “Prophet of the Gospel”. His holy relics were transported to Constantinople during the reign of Theodosius II (408 – 450 AD) and were enshrined in the church of the Holy Martyr Lawrence, next to the Church of Blachernae. The memory of the Prophet Isaiah is honoured on the 9th of May. Work of ARTIS GILDING AND RESTORING.
