Constantine, born in 272 AD, ruled the Roman Empire from 306 AD until his death. With his decree of religious toleration in 313 AD, he put a stop to the persecutions of the Christians, allowing them to worship God unimpeded and to spread their new faith. In 325 AD, he convened and personally presided over the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea in Asia Minor. This council is a cornerstone in the historical development of Christianity, since it condemned the heresy of Arianism and formulated the Creed that we today recite at every Divine Liturgy. A little before his death, Constantine received Christian baptism. Saint Helen was born 247 AD in Drepano of Bithania and was the mother of Constantine the Great. The Christian Church honours both her and her son as equals-to-the-Apostles. She decided go on a journey to find the Lord’s tomb and the crosses on which Christ and the two thieves were crucified. She found the Holy Cross and then funded the building of Christian churches throughout the Roman Empire. She died around the year 237 AD at the age of 80 years old. The relics of Saint Helen are found in Venice. The Church celebrates the memory of Saint Helen and her son on the 21st of May. Work of the iconographer Lazaros Pechlivanidis.
