The Three Holy Hierarchs were three of the most prominent Saints and theologians of the Orthodox Christian religion: John Chrysostom, Basil the Great and Gregory Nazianzus (the Theologian). This brilliant feast is a visible symbol of the equality of and unity of these Great Teachers, who taught the Gospel of Christ not only through their words but chiefly through the holiness of their lives.

The “Three holy children in the furnace” were three young Jewish men: Ananias, Azaria and Misael. They were educated in the imperial court, and the Prophet Daniel chose them to be his assistants, helping them attain high places in the government. In those years, Nebuchadnezzar was king of the Babylonians. He had created a “golden image” of himself and asked all of his officials and people to venerate it. The three children refused to worship it, and immediately they were denounced before the king. So the king threatened them that he would have them thrown into an open furnace of fire if they would not change their minds. This indeed occurred, but the three children were preserved by God unharmed. Amidst the flames, they were not burnt, but rather they gave unceasing glory to the Lord. Together with the Prophet Daniel, their memory is honoured on the 17th of December. Work of the iconographic studio of the Brotherhood Ch.E.
