Saint Nicholas was born in the 3rd century AD in Patara of Lycia to wealthy and noble parents. From a young age, he devoted himself to the ascetical life. On account of his incredible virtue, he was ordained to the priesthood in Patara, and later elevated to the office of the archiepiscopate of Myra. He led his flock with great love and, for this reason, he was arrested by the local authorities and thrown into jail. When Constantine the Great ascended to the imperial throne, however, Nicholas was restored to his archiepiscopal throne, even taking part in the First Ecumenical Council. God bestowed many graces on Saint Nicholas, including the ability to work miracles, which have saved many people, both during his life as well as after his blessed repose in 330 AD. Saint Nicholas is considered the patron saint of the Greek Navy and Coast Guard. His memory is honoured on the 6th of December.
Saint Spyridon was born in 270 AD in the village of Assia, Cyprus to a family of wealthy shepherds. Although he received a sufficient education, he chose to continue living as a shepherd. He married a pious woman and they had a daughter. Soon thereafter, however, his wife died. In order to cope with this trauma, Spyridon devoted himself even more intensely to the teachings of the Divine Word. After much pressure, he was ordained to the priesthood. As a priest, Spyridon advanced so much in virtue that God used him to work many miracles. He also took part in the First Ecumenical Council, where he refuted the Arians and showed himself to be the one of the most brilliant defenders of the Orthodox Faith. In the end, he reposed in 350 AD. His relics are incorrupt and kept in the church bearing his name in Corfu. His memory is celebrated on the 12th of December. Work of ARTIS GILDING AND RESTORING.
