Cyril and Methodius were brothers, born in Thessaloniki to a prominent and virtuous family. Methodius was born in 815 and Cyril in 827. At a young age, the two brothers went to the Monastery of Polychronius in Constantinople, where they pursued their studies. During the reign of Michael III Methysus (the Drunkard), Patriarch Photius of Constantinople chose them to become missionaries to the western Slavs. The two brothers invented the Glagolitic alphabet and translated into the Holy Scriptures, as well as many other liturgical and theological books.
