The 40 Holy Martyrs were soldiers during the reign if Licinius (308 – 323 AD). They refused to offer sacrifice to the idols and so were arrested. Before their persecutors, they openly confessed their faith in Christ. Disregarding the offer of praise and honours, they did not deny their faith and so they were punished by being forced to stand all night in an almost frozen lake. Only one of the forty lost his nerve and the solider who was guarding them saw crowns descending from heaven for the thirty-nine Martyrs and one left over. Seeing this, he ran into the water towards the Saints and confessed his faith in Christ with them. The pagans burned the holy bodies of those who had died already and threw their remains into the lake. Later, their relics were found on a cliff and interred with proper piety and reverence. Their memory is honoured on the 9th of March. Work of iconographer Andreas Lambrou.
