The Annunciation is the beginning of the whole cycle of dominical feasts (those dedicated to our Lord). The Archangel Gabriel, with outstretched hand, conveys the good news of salvation to the Virgin Mary. In his other hand, he holds a thin staff, the “kerykeion” or herald’s staff. The Mother of God stands before him, with humility and reverence, holding in one hand a spindle and thread, and she extends her open right hand in a gesture of wonder and admiration. Behind the Mother of God is an ornate throne with a red pillow and a table holding up a vase of white flowers (symbolizing her virginity). In the background, various houses can be seen. The Holy Spirit “in the form of a dove” can also be seen descending from the open sky, sending down rays of red light upon the Most Holy Mother of God. The Annunciation is celebrated on March 25th.
