The Presentation of the Lord is a feast in the Orthodox Church that commemorates Mary bringing Jesus to be dedicated to God at the Temple. At the centre of the icon, the Mother of God is seen meeting with the righteous Symeon the God-Receiver in front of the Temple in Jerusalem. The very old Symeon has received into his elderly arms the Christ Child from the Mother of God. The Virgin Mary is followed by Joseph the Betrothed who holds in his hands two turtledoves as an offering to be sacrificed at the Temple. Between the Mother of God and Joseph stand the Prophetess Anna, the “daughter of Phanouel” who prophesies concerning the Divine Infant. This event is celebrated liturgically on February 2nd.
