This collection of icons belongs to the period of Post-Byzantine Art, dating back to the 18th century. They are ideal for completing a series of icons showing the Twelve Feasts or for individual use. In the icon of Pentecost, the twelve Apostles are shown kneeling in a half-circle in the upper room in Jerusalem at the very hour in which the Holy Spirit is sent down among them. From the heavenly dome twelves rays of light stream down upon them and twelve tongues “like fire” stand above each of their heads. In the middle of the scene, an elderly figure wearing a crown holds taut a sheet of cloth upon which twelve scrolls are laid. The old man symbolizes the world while the scrolls indicate the twelve lots by which each Apostle was given his missionary destination. Pentecost is considered to be the birthday of the Church and is celebrated 49 days after Holy Pascha.
