Christ is depicted naked, standing in the river Jordan, wearing only a white cloth around his waist, which blows in the wind. Saint John the Baptist stands beside him, his hand extended, ready to baptize Him while a group of three angels bow in reverent worship. Tall, steep rocks form the riverbed of the Jordan, in which fish swim about, and there is a plaque on which Christ stands. In the lower part of the icon, there is a pickaxe leaning against the branches of a tree. In the background, the “opened heavens” are portrayed, and the Holy Spirit “in the form of a dove” is seen descending amidst red beams of light shining upon Christ. The feast of the Baptism of the Lord is celebrated on January 6th.
