The Prophet Daniel, born in the beginning of the 6th century BC in Jerusalem. He was one of the four great prophets of the Old Testament. He belonged to the tribe of Judah and of the kingly line of David. His name means, “the Lord is my judge”. When still a small child, he was taken together with his parents into captivity in Babylon. Under the care of the king Nebuchadnezzar, Daniel, along with three Jewish young men, Ananias, Azaria and Misael, were educated in the imperial court. Indeed, because they excelled in their studies, the king granted them high places in the government. Daniel also received from God the gift of dream interpretation. It is even said that he explained to Nebuchadnezzar two prophetic dreams, and he made him an administrator of Babylon. Later, during the reign of Darius, the court members of the king became jealous of him and slandered him, and they threw Saint into a pit of lions. God, however, saved him miraculously and put his accusers in the pit where they met their miserable end. Beholding the miracle, Darius kept Daniel in his court, where he remained until very old age and his death, most likely in Susa.
