Saint Athanasius is considered the founder of monastic life on Mount Athos. In 963, Athanasius built the Monastery of Great Lavra near the tip of the peninsula. Some months into the construction of the Lavra, necessary goods such as money, food and building materials began to run short. In despair, he abandoned the work and he left for Karyes, the capital, to see what he could do. After walking for two days, a majestic woman appeared before him on the road. She revealed to him that she was the Mother of God and told him that he must turn back and complete the work he had begun. Saint Athanasius, in order to confirm that everything she had said was true, asked for a sign. Then, the Theotokos told Saint Anthanasius to strike his staff against the rock next to him. When he did so, water began to flow from the rock. This water was refreshing and healed many illnesses. Work of ARTIS GILDING AND RESTORING.
