Saint Irene was born in Cappadocia and lived during the reign of the Empress Theodora. A man from the palace asked for her hand in a marriage, and so she left for Byzantium. On the way there, while passing by the Monastery of Chrysovalantou she felt a great desire to live amongst the nuns, and so she made the great decision to remain there among them. Turning down worldly glories and selling her possessions, she helped many poor people and gave all of her money to the Monastery. She became a nun and led a very ascetical life. In this particular icon, the Saint is depicted holding in her right hand the three apples she was sent by God. The angel, who is helping her in the difficult work of the salvation of souls, stands besides her holding a scroll. Next to the Saint, the cypress tree that bent while she was in prayer is depicted with a white cloth on top of it, while in the background we see the Monastery of Chrysovalantou. The Saint foreknew the time of her death and, after preparation, she reposed in peace. Her memory is honoured on the 28th of July. Work of iconographer Theodorakakos Vasileios.
