Icon with water-gilding on natural lime tree wood. The wood has been prepared in heat and gilded with gold leaf 24K, in accordance with traditional Byzantine techniques. The icon has been painted with egg-tempera paints for best performance and endurance of colors used. The colors were chosen based on studies and analyses of older icons by renowned iconographers, after ARTIS had first conducted conservation treatments on them. The gilded surface of the icon has been further decorated with hand-engravings (tsoukaniko).

Saint Spyridon was born in 270 AD in the village of Assia, Cyprus to a family of wealthy shepherds. Although he received a sufficient education, he chose to continue living as a shepherd. He married a pious woman and they had a daughter. Soon thereafter, however, his wife died. In order to cope with this trauma, Spyridon devoted himself even more intensely to the teachings of the Divine Word. After much pressure, he was ordained to the priesthood. As a priest, Spyridon advanced so much in virtue that God used him to work many miracles. He also took part in the First Ecumenical Council, where he refuted the Arians and showed  himself to be the one of the most brilliant defenders of the Orthodox Faith. In the end, he reposed in 350 AD. His relics are incorrupt and kept in the church bearing his name in Corfu. His memory is celebrated on the 12th of December.
