Icon with water-gilding on natural linden wood. The wood has been prepared in heat and gilded with gold leaf 24K, in accordance with traditional Byzantine techniques. The icon has been painted with egg-tempera paints for best performance and endurance of colors used. The colors were chosen based on studies and analyses of older icons by renowned iconographers, after ARTIS had first conducted conservation treatments on them.

Saint Luke the Archbishop was born in 1877 in Kerch of Crimea. He studied medicine and ophthalmology. In 1917 AD, he was made professor of medicine at the University of Tashkent. The Russian Revolution had already begun and the Church found itself in the crosshairs of the Bolsheviks. Then, Saint Luke was arrested for the first time. He was freed and afterwards he travelled to Pentzikent to be ordained a bishop. He was imprisoned in terrible conditions in Moscow. There he discovered he had early symptoms of cardiac insufficiency which would follow him through the rest of his life. While doctors insisted that his condition would not allow it, bishop Luke departed for exile in Siberia. Fortunately, two months later, on account of the death of a farmer, the residents of Turukhansk rose up and demanded the return of the bishop. In this way, Bishop Luke returned to Turkhansk and continued undisturbed his work until the end of his exile. Unfortunately, he faced much slander, which led him to resign from his episcopal see. He was exiled yet again to Northern Russia. At 70 years old, he became Archbishop of Simferopol and Crimea. The Archbishop reposed in peace on Sunday, June 11th, 1961 at the old age of 84 years old.
