Saint Marina was born in 270 AD in Antioch of Pisidia. Her father, Aidesius, as soon as she told him that she had become a Christian, disowned her as his child. Then, the eparch Olymbrius attempted to convince her to apostatize and become his wife. Saint Marina was unyielding, so the eparch ordered that she be subjected to horrible tortures and imprisoned. While in prison, the devil appeared to her as a dragon, but through prayer and the help of a hammer, she humiliated him. When the eparch examined her again, he discovered that Saint Marina’s faith in Christ was still steadfast, and so he burned her with lit candles. Her wounds closed miraculously, and the eparch ordered her beheading. Today, her Holy Relics are kept in Athens at the church bearing her name, while her hand is at the Monastery of Vatopedi on Mount Athos. Her memory is honoured on the 17th of July.
