Mary of Egypt was born in the Egyptian countryside during the reign of Justinian. From the age of 12 years old, she lived in Alexandria, where she led a dissolute life. In search of new adventures, she went to Jerusalem when she was 29 years old. One day, a great mass of people had gathered in the city to celebrate the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Suddenly, a miracle occurred, and she “saw the true light”, and after praying before and venerating the Holy Cross of the Lord, she decided to abandon the world’s oldest profession and flee to the desert, where she lived as an ascetic for 47 years. During those years, she was naked and lived off of the grace of God alone. Abba Zosimas, the only person who ever saw her in the desert, described her as “a shadow that resembled a human body”. According to her biographer, she died on Great Thursday, April 1st, which then became the day on which the Church celebrates her memory. Work of ARTIS GILDING AND RESTORING.
