Eve was the first woman, as well as the second human being created by God after Adam. Her name was given to her by her husband after the fall and indeed, it means “giver of life” or simply “life”. She was fashioned by God on the sixth day of creation from the side of Adam while he was sleeping. The first-created humans lived in the garden of Eden without sin. God had allowed them to eat fruit from all of the trees of the garden, except for one, from which it was forbidden to eat because they would become mortal and die. The devil, out of jealousy for the first humans’ happiness, decided to destroy them. He told Eve that God had forbidden the one fruit to them because he knew that on the day they would taste it, their eyes would “open” and they would become gods. In this way, Adam and Eve were led into sin, bringing the curse of God upon them and the entire human race. Through their action, known as the “ancestral sin”, sin and death came into the world. The Orthodox Church celebrates the memory of Adam and Eve on the Sunday before the Nativity of Christ, between December 18th and 24th of each year.
