Saint Paraskeva was born in Rome and was daughter to a pious, Christian couple. After the death of her parents, she gave all of her possessions to the poor and began preaching the word of God throughout the region. The emperor Antoninus subjected her to many tortures which, by the grace of God, she endured unharmed. This occurred in such a remarkable fashion that the emperor himself came to belief in Christ. Paraskeva continued preaching the Gospel in other places, until she reached Greece. In Tempe, a pagan leader completed her martyrdom by ordering her beheading. She is considered the patron saint of Komotini, Halkida and Lavrio. Her feast day is celebrated on the 26th of July. Work of iconographer Lazaros Pechlivanidis.
