The Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna was the third daughter of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. During the First World War, she visited and helped injured soldiers in the hospitals. On the 17th of July, 1918, she was murdered by the Bolsheviks, because of this, she was recognized as a saint by the Russian Orthodox Church.

The Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna of Russia was born on the 14th of June, 1899. She was the third daughter of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and Tsarina Alexandra. Like her older sisters, during the First World War, she visited and helped injured soldiers in the hospitals. She was too young to become a nurse for the Red Cross and so her duties were limited to helping entertain the soldiers. On the 17th of July, 1918, she was murdered along with her family by the Bolsheviks, and because of this, they were all recognized as saints by the Russian Orthodox Church.
