Saint Ludmilla was likely born around the year 856 AD to a noble family of pagans. At the age of 16 years old, she married the Czech prince Bořivoj I of Bohemia. They devoted themselves to Christianity under the influence of the missionary Saints Cyril and Methodius, Equals-to-the-Apostles, who were then in Bohemia. From that time, the two rulers built many churches and took care that the whole Czech people embrace the Christian religion. However, Bořivoj departed this life at only 36 years old. His grandson Wenceslaus and wife Drahomira took the place of the departed king, but they attempted to restore paganism and idolatry. Ludmilla tried to stop them by every means possible, but her daughter-in-law turned against her. Ultimately, she was put to death by hanging in 917 AD, in a tower where she had hidden for refuge. Later, her grandson Wenceslaus repented and brought her Holy relics to Prague, where they have been kept until this very day. Her memory is honoured on the 16th of September.
