Saint Helen, who faced martyrdom in the 18th century AD, came from a city in Pontus named Sinope. She was the daughter of the pious Bekiaris family. The ruler of Sinope wanted to corrupt the virginity of the beautiful Helen, and when she rejected him, he put her under house arrest. Helen got away, but the ruler did not give up. He threatened to slaughter the whole population of the village if she did not return. The young virgin ultimately handed herself over to the ruler, who tried many times, although unsuccessfully, to satisfy his desires with her. In the end, he became enraged and had the chaste girl tortured and put to death with two nails through her head. Her skull was found in the sea and then transported to the church of the Theotokos of Sinope. Today, the holy skull of Saint Helen can be found at the Church of Saint Marina the Great Martyr in Upper Toumba in Thessaloniki. Her memory is celebrated on the 1st of November.
