SAINT XENIA OF SAINT PETERSBURG

Icon with water-gilding on linden wood. Icon painting that employs the most suitable colors and application of egg-tempera paints. Water-gilding with gold leaf 24K.

After the death of her husband, Saint Xenia gave her fortune away to the poor. She lived the rest of her life in complete poverty and humiliation as an ascetic on the streets of Saint Petersburg. She reposed in peace in 1801 at the age of 71 years old. She was buried in Smolensk cemetery of Saint Petersburg.

Icon with water-gilding on natural linden wood. The wood has been prepared in heat and gilded with gold leaf 24K, in accordance with traditional Byzantine techniques. The icon has been painted with egg-tempera paints for best performance and endurance of colors used. The colors were chosen based on studies and analyses of older icons by renowned iconographers, after ARTIS had first conducted conservation treatments on them.

Saint Xenia was born to a wealthy family from the upper classes of Russian society. At the age of 26 years old, after the death of her husband, she gave her fortune away to the poor. After eight years of spiritual preparation at a hermitage, she lived the rest of her life in complete poverty and humiliation as an ascetic on the streets of Saint Petersburg in the Russian north. Pretending to be crazy, she hid her spiritual gifts and provoked the mocking and disgust of others to help her learn humility. But the humbler she became, the more exalted she became in the eyes of God. She reposed in peace in 1801 at the age of 71 years old. She was buried in Smolensk cemetery of Saint Petersburg.
