Saint Anna was the Mother of the Virgin Mary. According to the tradition of the Church, Saint Anna was from the tribe of Levi and married to Joachim. The couple was unable to have children for many years and begged God that they would give birth to a child. Saint Anna gave birth to the Virgin Mary when she was already very old. As soon as the young Mary finished nursing, Saint Anna gave her over to serve in the Temple in Jerusalem. From that time onward, Saint Anna devoted the rest of her life to fasting and prayer until the she finally reposed in peace. A portion of her relics are found at the Holy Monastery of Saint Anna on Mount Athos. Her memory is celebrated three times throughout the church year, her Conception on the 9th of December, her Dormition on the 25th of July and on the 9th of September alongside her husband Joachim.
