This icon of the Archangel Michael hails from the 10th century AD, a time when the shores of the Aegean were being raided by ruthless Saracen pirates. One night, they invaded the monastery of the Archangels and slaughtered all of the monks inside. One novice, Gabriel, escaped by climbing onto the roof, while the pirates were trying to hunt him down. Then, it is said that the roof was transformed into a stormy ocean and the Archangel Michael appeared in the middle of it, ready to attack them. The novice monk, saved by the miracle, made clay from the blood of the fallen monks in honour of the Archangel Michael in thanksgiving for his miraculous help. The icon is unique because of the manner and the conditions under which it came to be. It is found at the Monastery of the Archangel Michael in Mantamados, Lesbos. Its patronal feast is celebrated on the Sunday of the Myrrh-Bearing Women. Work of iconographer Lazaros Pechlivanidis.
